In Any Language

Summary : Sara is learning a new language.
Rating : PG
Pairing : Nick Stokes / Sara Sidle
Disclaimer : None of the characters are mine. If they were, they'd be naked a lot more often.

Authors Note : There I was, happily doing my Latin homework, when this plot bunny attacked out of nowhere and insisted that I write this. So I did. Sorry to my tutor for the late homework. Dedicated to Rosie.

Sara sat at the table, her eyes fixated on the text book open in front of her. She was so engrossed that she didn't hear the door open.

"Hey Sara."

As usual, Nick sounded far too cheerful for someone who'd been working a double-shift. But then, Nick somehow managed to sound cheerful all the time. Night or day.

Not lifting her eyes away from her work, she responded with an unenthusiastic "Hi" and carried on.

"Why is it," Nick asked, "Whenever we get a break, you end up sitting in here with your nose in a book?"

He never actually expected an answer, so had his next question all lined up. He tried again.

"So what is it this time? Entomology? Quantum Mechanics for beginners? Cookery?"

"Latin."

"Latin? Why?"

"Because I want to."

That was typical of Sara. She always had to learn one more thing. She was never satisfied with just being great at what she did – she wanted to be great at everything.

"So say something in Latin for me." Nick had never been much of a student – he'd had to put in a lot of hard work to get his degree – and he was always impressed with how quickly and easily Sara learnt new things.

Not that he'd ever admit that to her.

"I'm not that good at it yet, " she argued, already mentally preparing a sentence to impress him with in her mind.

"Go on. Try something and I'll try and guess what it means."

She smiled, knowing that he wouldn't have a chance of guessing the sentence. It was a perfect opportunity for her to say something to him that she would never have the courage to say normally.

"Ok. Here goes. Volo amor tuus."

Nick thought for a while, trying not to smile at her.

"Nope. I give up. What does it mean?"

"That's for me to know…….." She let the sentence trail off as she gathered up her notes and headed for the door.

Nick chuckled to himself and shook his head as he watched her leave. He should have made a small confession to her. He knew Latin. He'd studied it for years. And it didn't take an expert to translate her sentence to mean 'I want your love'.

He kept watching as she walked down the corridor.

"You already have it," he said softly.
