You Won't Be Mine

Summary : A fluffy little songfic
Rating : PG
Pairing : Sam Carter / Daniel Jackson
Disclaimer : None of the characters are mine. If they were, they'd be naked a lot more often. Song lyrics belong to Matchbox 20.

Author's Notes : I know, I know, a songfic. Everyone says not to write them, but this song breaks my heart. I was listening to it the other day and realised that Daniel loves Sam. Poor baby.

*

Over the lies, you'll be strong
You'll be rich in love and you will carry on
But no - oh no
No you won't be mine

As usual, Sam had confided in Daniel. They had been friends for so long that she never had any doubt where else to turn. Recently she’d turned to him more and more. It was always the same thing. Jack. Colonel O’Neill. The one man that Sam truly loved.

And, as usual, Daniel had to sit and pretend that he was satisfied being just friends. The truth was almost too much for him to acknowledge. For the last four years, he’d found himself falling slowly in love with Sam. But he understood that no matter what, he would never tell her.

Every time Jack had done something to upset Sam, or had made her happy, it was Daniel who was the first to know. When they encountered the Sam from the parallel universe, the one who had given into her love, Sam came to Daniel, crying, wondering why it couldn’t have been her.

And Daniel had held her, loving the feeling of her in his arms, and not been able to tell her what was in his heart.

When Sam and Jack had been trapped off-world and had he’d confessed that he felt more than he should for her, it wasn’t Jack she went to. It was Daniel. And again he felt himself torn in two. He was the one to tell her that everything would be ok and that it would all work out in the end.

Take yourself out to the curb
Sit and wait
A fool for life
It's almost like a disease

What was he supposed to tell her? That Jack would never give up his career for her? That she was wasting her time loving him. That he, a geek who’s only lover had been a woman from another planet who had been given to him as a gift, was the one that she should be with.

He would never do that to her. He knew that whatever he said, it would make no difference. She loved Jack. It was clear to anyone around them. It was also clear that nothing would ever come of it, but how do you break someone’s heart and tell them that?

No. Instead, he held her tight when she broke down in his arms again. He knew how hard it had been for her to leave Jack trapped in Antarctica like that. Hell, it had almost killed him to do it, too. Jack was his best friend. And Sam was the woman that he loved.

There was no way he would hurt either of them.

Better his heart be shattered than theirs.

Fin.
